Descriptions:
The ongoing loan controversy between Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo and Peter Obi has taken another political turn, with fresh questions over Obi’s financial record as governor.
The Soludo administration says Obi’s government left behind eight external loan programmes with an outstanding balance of about ₦127.37 billion as of June 30, 2026. The state says the loans covered projects including healthcare, education, agriculture and erosion control.
Peter Obi has rejected the allegations, insisting that he left office in March 2014 without owing salaries, pensions, gratuities or verified contractors. He has also maintained that he did not borrow or issue bonds on behalf of Anambra State during his tenure.
The dispute has now generated a wider political conversation: has the renewed focus on Obi’s record strengthened the scrutiny of his past administration, or has it inadvertently brought even more attention to his political profile ahead of 2027?
In this episode, we examine the loan claims, Obi’s response, Soludo’s position and the documents and figures being presented by both sides.
