Descriptions:

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has given the Federal Government a two-week ultimatum to reduce petrol prices to the level that prevailed when the current national minimum wage was signed into law in 2024. The ultimatum begins on Friday, October 9, 2026, according to a communiqué signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero. (Channels Television)

Labour says the high cost of petrol has pushed up transportation fares, food prices and the cost of essential goods, leaving Nigerian workers struggling to make ends meet.

Beyond fuel prices, the NLC is demanding that the Federal Government begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage before the end of October. It has also called for agreed tax relief, outstanding wage awards and the implementation of existing agreements with public-sector and health-sector workers. (Punch)

The ultimatum comes amid the Federal Government’s proposed petrol-price relief measures, including a 30-day discount on petrol sold by NNPC Limited. Labour is insisting that the government must do more to ease the pressure on workers and households. (Nairametrics)

Will the Tinubu administration meet Labour’s demands before the deadline? What happens if the Federal Government fails to act? Could the dispute lead to further industrial action?

Watch the full report for the latest developments on fuel prices, subsidy policy, workers’ demands and the Federal Government’s response.
