Descriptions:

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has revealed details of an alleged proposal by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to have Peter Obi serve as his running mate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to Lawal, Atiku personally sent him to persuade Peter Obi to return to the political arrangement and accept the vice-presidential slot on the ADC platform.

Lawal also claimed that the proposal included discussions about changing Nigeria’s constitutional arrangement to a single six-year presidential term and rotating the presidency to the Southeast afterward.

He said he met with Obi and presented the proposal, but Obi was not receptive to the idea.

The account comes amid the political realignment that has seen Atiku remain with the ADC, while Obi moved to the NDC, where he is now paired with Rabiu Kwankwaso.

However, Obi has previously said he was not in a position where Atiku formally offered him the vice-presidential slot.

What really happened behind the scenes between Atiku and Obi? What does Babachir Lawal’s latest revelation tell us about the opposition negotiations ahead of 2027?
