The camp of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has dismissed the seriousness of several presidential aspirants ahead of the 2027 general election, describing some candidates as content creators rather than genuine contenders for power. Lere Olayinka, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, made the remarks on Thursday while appearing on TVC’s Beyond the Headlines programme.
Olayinka questioned whether all 19 presidential candidates were genuinely seeking to win the election, arguing that some were contesting primarily to remain politically relevant and generate social media attention. He specifically criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, while arguing that the opposition had failed to present a coherent alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Olayinka also expressed confidence in Tinubu’s re-election prospects, citing what he described as the administration’s performance and political reach. These remarks represent the position of Wike’s camp, not an independent assessment of the candidates’ chances. With political activities gathering momentum ahead of 2027, the comments have renewed debate over the opposition’s strategy, the credibility of competing candidates and whether Nigerians will see a contest centred on policies, records and solutions to the country’s challenges.
Are the opposition candidates presenting clear alternatives to Tinubu, or is the campaign increasingly becoming a battle of political attacks and social media narratives? Share your views in the comments. Subscribe for more Nigerian political news, interviews and analysis.
