As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general election, retired Supreme Court Justice Amina Adamu Augie has warned that disregard for court orders, political interference and weaknesses in the justice system pose serious threats to the country’s democracy.
Speaking at a public lecture in Abuja on October 17, 2026, Augie stressed that democracy cannot thrive when those in positions of authority treat court judgments as optional. She also raised concerns about delayed justice, the high cost of litigation, corruption and declining public confidence in the judiciary.
The retired jurist called for reforms to make justice more accessible, protect judicial independence and ensure that government officials and political actors respect the rule of law.
Her warning comes as Nigeria prepares for another election cycle, when disputes over party primaries, candidate eligibility and election results could place additional pressure on the courts.
Augie’s message also challenges lawyers, political leaders and citizens to consider their roles in protecting the integrity of democratic institutions.
With the 2027 election approaching, can Nigeria guarantee a judiciary that delivers timely, impartial justice and holds everyone accountable, regardless of political influence?
Watch for the full discussion on the judiciary, the rule of law and the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
