Political tension has escalated in Ebonyi State following a reported attack on the convoy of Rollins Offia Nwali, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Ezza South State House of Assembly constituency.
According to SaharaReporters, the incident occurred on Thursday as Nwali’s motorcade returned from Amazekewe community. Armed assailants allegedly opened fire on the convoy and set the candidate’s Toyota Hilux ablaze.
Security personnel attached to the candidate reportedly returned fire, killing one alleged attacker at the scene. A second suspected attacker was reported to have died later in hospital, although the identities and political affiliations of those involved had not been independently verified.
Nwali confirmed the attack in a statement shared on Facebook, saying he and his team were safe. He also appealed to young people not to allow themselves to be used for political violence, stressing that no political ambition was worth a human life.
The incident raises fresh concerns about political security and the safety of opposition candidates as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Who is responsible for the growing tension, and what should security agencies do to protect candidates and supporters across party lines?
