Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has warned that political violence, voter intimidation and impunity could threaten Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Falana raised the alarm over the growing use of threatening rhetoric by political actors, warning that failure to prosecute those who threaten voters could encourage further violence during future elections. He made the remarks while chairing the Bishop Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture in Lagos, where he called for electoral credibility, judicial integrity and greater protection of democratic rights.
The warning comes as opposition leaders, including Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), prepare for the 2027 contest amid concerns about voter intimidation, electoral manipulation and the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Falana has also called for INEC’s complete autonomy, stressing that elections should be decided by voters rather than violence or questionable electoral practices. His warning highlights the need for political parties, candidates, security agencies and election officials to protect voters and ensure that Nigerians can participate freely and safely.
