FUEL PRICE: ATIKU TACKLES LOKPOBIRI, SAYS NIGERIA’S REALITY DIFFERS FROM US

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has challenged Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, over the Federal Government’s comparison of petrol prices in Nigeria and the United States.

Lokpobiri argued that petrol is cheaper in Nigeria than in the US and said global market forces influence fuel prices under the country’s deregulated downstream petroleum sector.

Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, countered that comparing pump prices without considering workers’ incomes and purchasing power does not fully reflect affordability. He cited the difference between what a Nigerian earning the minimum wage can purchase and what a US worker can afford from their earnings.

The dispute comes as petrol prices remain a major cost-of-living issue in Nigeria, with pump prices around N1,400 per litre in Lagos and Abuja and higher in some parts of the country.

Watch the full report as Atiku’s camp responds to Lokpobiri’s fuel-price argument and explains why it says income, purchasing power and cost of living should be part of the comparison.
